 In the case of monomers polymerizing by different mechanisms, eg radical to acrylate and cationically for epoxide is obtained after irradiation, two interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) with properties vastly different. Kinetic studies showed that both polymerization processes develop simultaneously but independently of one another in a time scale less than the second.

Polymeric materials with well-defined characteristics can be rapidly synthesized by photopolymerization of a mixture of multifunctional monomers. In the case of monomers polymerizing by different mechanisms, eg radical to acrylate and cationically for epoxide is obtained after irradiation, two interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) with properties vastly different. Kinetic studies conducted by Prof. C. DECKER showed that both polymerization processes develop simultaneously but independently of one another in a time scale less than the second.

Different types of hybrid systems photopolymerizable were developed to improve the performance of the crosslinked materials, including couples vinyl ether / acrylate, epoxy acrylate and epoxy / vinyl ether.

The main advantage of hybrid systems is the ability to combine in one material the main features of both networks, involving, for example, the elastomeric nature of poly (vinyl ether) and the rigidity of the polyacrylate or polyepoxide. This gives a hard material and yet flexible, which has good resistance to impact and scratching. We were able to assemble, by acting on the relative proportions of the two monomers, one can vary the physicochemical properties of the IPN in a wide area and produce organic materials having the characteristics desired by our customers.
