UV technology has also been used to carry out the photochemical grafting by one of the most effective ways to quickly modify the surface properties of organic materials. This technique has been successfully applied in the case of poly (vinyl chloride) which has been rendered resistant to organic solvents by grafting an acrylic coating photoréticulé. In the case of polyolefins, the process is more difficult to implement due to the lack of reactive sites on the polymer chain. The typical approach is to generate, by exposure to g-rays or electron beam (EB), groups and hydroperoxides decompose them with a heat treatment to form macroradicaux that initiates the polymerization of monomer for grafting.

The process developed by Photon & Polymers is to create radical sites on the surface of the sample by photolysis of a photo-excited states which have the particularity to pull an atom of hydrogen in organic material. The photochemical treatment alters the surface energy of the polymer since the contact angle of water moves from an initial value of 90° to 30° after grafting. This process has all the inherent benefits of photochemical initiation, namely the speed of the process, low energy consumption, negligible emission of volatile organic compounds, the process of performing in a few seconds a uniform grafting of the surface of the sample and to make this hydrophilic polyolefin to operate at room temperature and the possibility to perform the surface treatment by a continuous process. Moreover, as the grafting only in areas lit, can be achieved after development aqueous images in relief on hydrophilicity-controlled. Through this process we can control, among others, the surface properties of organic materials to improve adhesion, resistance to chemicals or friction.
